What to Check Before Approving Your Tattoo Placement

Step back from the mirror before approving your tattoo placement. Check the whole outline with your body relaxed, then look closely at the details. This is the time to mention an edge that feels too high, a face that turns out of view or a gap you wanted to keep.

What should you look at first?

Start with the outer shape. Notice where the design begins and ends, how much space remains around it and whether the strongest feature sits where you expected. Then look at the face, animal or symbol that matters most to you. A slight shift can change which feature is visible from an ordinary viewing angle.

The Classical warrior and temple study has a tall helmet above a smaller architectural element. As a design study, it illustrates two levels of emphasis. If a drawing like this wraps around a limb, check both levels rather than approving only the helmet.

Which views are worth checking?

Look in the mirror from a normal distance, then closer. Where appropriate, compare a relaxed position with the position used to show the stencil. Ask the artist which changes come from body movement and which can be addressed by repositioning the design.

For lettering, check the actual wording and orientation rather than relying on how familiar the phrase looks. For neighboring work, identify the space you want preserved. Taking a moment to explain a concern is more useful than agreeing while still uncertain.

Does the stencil show the final shading?

Usually it is a guide to selected shapes, not a complete tonal preview. Ask which lines are guides and where major dark or open areas are intended. Do not assume every visible guide will become an equally dark line.
